Yellow weather warning for thunderstorms as up to 30mm of rain to fall in an hour

Two new yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms have been issued for England, with up to 30mm of rain forecast to fall in under an hour.

The Met Office has warned heavy, thundery rain may lead to travel disruption from Friday afternoon through much of Saturday.

Temperatures will rise on Friday, with many areas experiencing heat in the high 20s. Saturday is also expected to be warm.

On Friday, a yellow thunderstorm warning will come into force at 12pm and ends at 8pm, covering Lincolnshire in the East Midlands, North East England and Yorkshire and Humber.

The Met Office said: “Showers and thunderstorms will develop across parts of northern England early Friday afternoon, before becoming concentrated across parts of northeast England.

“Fifteen to 25mm of rain is possible in less than an hour, and should storms become aligned across similar areas, 40-60mm of rain is possible, with these higher totals most likely over the North York Moors.”

In addition to heavy rain frequent lightning and large hail are also possible.

Another yellow weather warning, which starts at 9pm on Friday through to 6pm on Saturday, covers much of England, including London and the South East, and the West Midlands.

“Thundery rain will reach the south of the warning area later Friday before spreading north to affect much of England through Saturday. Rain will likely be locally torrential, bringing 20-30mm in less than an hour in many places, with 60-90 mm in less than three hours possible in a few places.

“Whilst rain will clear from the south of the area by early Saturday afternoon, further thunderstorms are likely to develop here,” the Met Office said.

Frequent lightning, gusty winds and large hail are also expected.

Elsewhere, a yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for much of Northern Ireland from 11am until 8pm on Thursday.

Western parts of Scotland will also see heavy, thundery downpours on Thursday.

It comes just days after the UK experienced its third heatwave of the year and drought was declared in East and West Midlands.

Rainfall in June was 20 per cent less than long term average for the month. It was also the hottest June on record for England.

Reservoir levels have continued to fall, with overall storage across England at 75.6 per cent. In Yorkshire, where the first major hosepipe ban of the year was introduced, reservoir levels are at 53.8 per cent.

South East Water and Thames Water have also both announced hosepipe bans.

Further warm weather is expected over the weekend and temperatures are forecast to rise into the 30s in London.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said Friday will see “some decent sunshine on offer and with that temperatures even higher than today”.

“There’s a good chance we’re going to get back into the low 30s, so a lot of heat around, high humidity as well,” he added.

Saturday could still be very warm, particularly towards the South – but temperatures are expected to drop.
