A volcano exploded in Iceland marking the 12th time in the four years for a volcanic system near Reykjavik that has been increasingly active.
Although the eruption blew clouds of gray smoke into the air, it emitted a small amount of lava and does not pose a threat to people or infrastructure, Gisli Olafsson, the secretary general of the Icelandic Red Cross, stated on social media.
Magma breached the top of the Sundhnukur crater early morning, more than two hours after earthquakes began in the area, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
The crater lies between Grindavik, a fishing village 25 miles southwest of Reykjavik, and the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa north of the villagewhich is popular with international tourists. The Icelandic authorities evacuated both Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon ahead of the eruption.
It was not known whether the Blue Lagoon had been closed, as it was after an eruption in the area in April. The company that runs the spa did not respond to inquiries.
A volcanic eruption in southwestern Iceland had once again forced the evacuation of tourists at the internationally known Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, the national broadcaster RUV reported.
The Meteorological Office stated that the eruptive fissure was about half a mile long and that the lava was mostly flowing southeast, away from any infrastructure. No immediate damages or injuries were reported.
West Iceland's volcano is an activity volcano, that involves the earth being pull apart in two different directions through the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, rather than a cone erupting magma through a central pipe.Once the lava erupts, pressure is released, allowing magma to flow back into the shallow underground reservoir — rebuilding pressure in the system and preparing it for the next eruption.
In short, the site of the latest eruption is considered favorable, as the lava flows are unlikely to pose a threat to any infrastructure, according to Minney Sigurðardóttir, a natural hazard expert at the Met Office.
