KUT: A devastating fire at Hyper Mall in eastern Iraq has claimed around 50 lives, with many more injured, according to state media. The blaze, which erupted late Wednesday, engulfed the newly opened shopping centre, leaving charred bodies and overwhelmed hospitals in its wake.
Wasit province governor Mohammed al-Miyahi confirmed the toll, stating, “The number of victims has reached about 50 people, martyrs and injured, in the tragic fire at a major shopping centre.” The cause remains unknown, though initial reports suggest the fire began on the first floor.
Ambulances worked through the night, transporting casualties to Kut’s hospitals, located 160 kilometres southeast of Baghdad. An AFP correspondent noted the mall had only been operational for five days before the disaster.
