“I think one of most rapidly trending styles right now is what would be described as vintage, but make it bold. Right now there’s a mix of Y2K, 90s and early 2000s,” said Sophia Medlen, a freshman majoring in psychology. “Baggy jeans, tiny tops, mixed textures and a lot of statement pieces, especially in jewelry/accessories.”
Take music alone, where artists have embraced ‘90s culture in both their everyday and signature styles. From Chapell Roan’s use of ‘90s grunge harnesses and chokers to Morgan Wallen’s trademark rural mullet, celebrities have begun to revive vintage fashion trends.
While the movement is generally dominated by musicians embracing the minimalist and grunge styles, actors and influencers are following suit. Kylie Jenner in a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier mesh top and Dua Lipa re-wearing Pamela Anderson-style tank dresses are only the beginning of a long list of modern celebrities embracing ‘90s style. Historians argue for nostalgia, and while that may have been true for previous generations, most rising stars did not grow up in the ‘90s, removing an emotional, nostalgic connection.
“Most of our new celebrities, like Benson Boone, Chappell Roan and Tate McRae, are classified as Gen Z. Gen Z does not have a firm connection to the ‘90s as we were either too young to remember it or we simply were not born,” said Jackson Bowen, a junior majoring in apparel design. “Therefore, the ‘90s offer fashion styles that seem new and fresh to the Gen Z mind without having to figure out something completely new.”
Medlen continues drawing parallels between the past and now: “The ‘90s was an era of rebellion, authenticity and breaking away from traditional beliefs. I think a lot of artists are embracing this, standing out and tapping into the Gen Z audience.”
The Gen Z audience is not only obsessed with celebrity fashion, but they are also extremely susceptible to online fashion advice from their favorite stars and influencers. In 2024, Vogue Business reported three in 10 people from Gen Z were using social media for fashion inspiration, and 77% of Gen Z members accessed internet fashion boards on a monthly basis.
“Celebrities have a major influence on style trends because whatever style they’re doing, people will take after it,” said Amira McCants, a sophomore studying psychology. Gen Z has been reached, as celebrity fashion dominates the public sphere, permeating out to general audiences.
As the line between a celebrity’s personal life and camera life continues to disappear with the demand for social media presence, fashion decisions are under constant scrutiny. In turn, every article becomes a source of inspiration for eager fanbases to draw from.
“For celebrities such as Billie Eilish, Zendaya and Hailey Bieber, when they wear something, it’s instantly pinned and in demand. Even if it’s just a single piece inspired by said celebrities, it still creates waves,” Medlen said.
In turn, clothing and footwear companies are riding the ‘90s wave, with Birkenstock, Champion and JNCO profiting off their ‘90s styles. In addition, Abercrombie & Fitch reported a 22% annual increase in first-quarter sales, topping $1 billion after reforming their business model to account for the cuts and quality of ‘90s trends.
“90s fashion is definitely growing for America. Urban Outfitters immediately comes to mind when I think of 90s inspired clothing,” Medlen said, adding that specific styles of content bring this about. “A lot of social media influencers also include more unique and old fashioned clothes in their GRWM videos.”
Bowen’s love of animal print, Medlen’s adoration for mom jeans and McCants’ appreciation for a clean, black lip-liner are all living examples of the impact that ‘90s revival culture has on our generation, from the pop stars to the American college experience.
“It’s a simple, classic look that can easily fit into any wardrobe,” Medlen said.
