Stranger Things season 5 trailer is finally released and teases terrifying return

Stranger Things has finally dropped a teaser trailer for its fifth and final season – with things looking bleak for the gang.

The trailer release marks the ninth anniversary of the show premiering on Netflix, which kickstarted one of the streaming service's biggest cultural phenomenons.

But all good things must come to an end, with Stranger Things set to conclude with a three-part final season that will end on New Year's Eve – and will be going out all guns blazing.

From a first look at the group's efforts to close the portal to the Upside Down, to Dustin grieving the loss of Eddie Munson (who everyone in town thinks is an evil murderer), there's plenty to feast your eyes on in this jam-packed teaser.

The new season will see the characters in 1987, with the town of Hawkins, Indiana recovering from the Rifts that claimed multiple lives and left dozens of others missing.

But while the community grieves, our main gang are on a mission to find and kill Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) once and for all.

With the evil monster missing and with no idea where he could be, things are made even more complicated when Hawkins is put under military quarantine by the government, who have upped their efforts in finding the supernatural Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).

As Eleven is forced into hiding, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) finds himself feeling a terrifying sense of dread as the anniversary of his disappearance into the Upside Down approaches.

The official synopsis teaser reads: "The final battle is looming – and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone – the full party – standing together, one last time.”

Volume 1 (episodes 1-4) premieres on 26th November; Volume 2 (episodes 5-7) will air on Christmas Day (25th December); and the finale (episode 8) will debut on New Year’s Eve (31st December).
