Portillos, Lou Malnatis launch ‘Chicago Dog Deep Dish Pizza — and we tried it

Nothing says Chicago like hot dogs…or pizza. And in honor of National Hot Dog Day, which falls on Wednesday, two iconic Chicago restaurants just launched a hot dog pizza–literally.

The limited time “Chicago Dog Deep Dish Pizza,” a collaboration from Portillo’s and Lou Malnati’s, is exactly what it sounds like: A deep dish pizza with all seven ingredients atop a Chicago-style hot dog, Portillo’s said: mustard, relish, onions, tomato, pickle, sport peppers and celery salt.

Of course, there’s a sliced-up hot dog on the pie too, and a poppyseed pizza crust.

“At Portillo’s, Chicago-style hot dogs are more than just a menu item–they’re a part of our DNA,” Vallory McCormack, director of marketing for Portillo’s said in a release announcing “Crosstown Collaboration.”

NBC Chicago tasted the pizza, along side a classic Chicago-style Portillo’s hot dog, at a press event this week. The results were as Chicago as it gets.

A birds-eye view of the pizza looks like a classic Lou Malnati’s deep dish pizza, but with chopped-up Chicago-style hot dog on top — including a long drizzle of mustard. Poppyseeds can be spotted mixed in with the crust, paying homage to the legendary bun that so lovingly comforts the dog itself.

    There’s an unexpected ingredient, too.

While there’s chopped up tomatoes on top of the cheese, there’s also chunky pieces of Lou’s Malnati’s recognizable tomato sauce under it, giving the slice more of a sweet — or dare we say, ketchup-y taste — which in some Chicago circles marks a forbidden move.

After testing the slice and the classic dog side-by-side, NBC Chicago determined the pizza does in fact taste like a hot dog, and a good one, too. But some of the best bites of a hot dog can only be had by eating the iconic wiener itself.

While all the ingredients on the pizza were certainly visible, not every bite captured them all at once. For instance, pieces of a finely chopped pickle didn’t deliver the same kind of tang and acidity a full pickle spear holds. Similarly, smaller bits of the sport pepper and scattered celery salt didn’t always pack the same kind of punch.

Still, the collaboration is worth trying, especially on National Hot Dog Day. To celebrate the limited-edition pizza, Lou Malnati’s will operate a pop-up hot dog stand outside the Gold Coast location, at 1120 N. State Street beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, giving away free slices to the public while supplies last, the release said.

The Chicago Dog Deep Dish pizza will also be available starting Wednesday in 21 Lou Malnati’s dine-in locations throughout the country while supplies last, the release added.
