TMZreports that Propstore, an auction house famous for pawning off movie memorabilia, is about to put the iconic prop on the block in September. In photos, the prop looks similar to the toy version you can purchase for $35 from the Disney Store. However, the real thing looks much heavier duty, appearing to be made of metal rather than plastic. It also looks pretty beat up, especially near the top, where the black paint has significantly chipped off. Apparently, its base was once the handle to a camera flash, rebuilt and repurposed as the Sith Lord's ultimate weapon.
Unlike the toy lightsaber, this one only comes with the base. That's because there never was a physical light attachment. The weapon's glowy light effects were all animated in post-production.
If the lightsaber's price is a bit steep, Propstore is also offering an iconic prop from another Harrison Ford movie: Indiana Jones' whip from The Last Crusade, complete with the belt and holster. The price estimate for this is much more reasonable: only between $250,000 and $500,000. Chump change!
