Nearly two dozen displaced puppies and dogs from a rescue organization in Texas arrived at PAWS Chicago late Monday night after a 500-mile plane and van journey, with more on the way as the shelter works to rescue the pets from the devastating flash floods.
Photos and video show several of the sweet and cuddly puppies safely settling in at PAWS Chicago Kocourek Medical Center, where they began to receive medical care, vaccinations and more.
According to PAWS Chicago, another transport flight carrying “dozens of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens” from a rescue in Austin will arrive Wednesday. Those animals on a “Dog is My CoPilot” plane, will land at Waukesha Airport in Wisconsin before they will join the other 22 dogs and puppies at the PAWS Chicago Medical Center, the release said.
The release went on to say that Texas shelters have been overwhelmed with rescue pets. Relocating animals up for adoption to PAWS Chicago will help local resources focus on reuniting missing pets with their owners in the flood-stricken areas.
A recent Facebook post from PAWS Chicago said they were searching for foster homes for the transplanted pets.
“This week, we will be welcoming pets from the flood impacted areas of Texas,” the message said. “Pets who were in the shelters before storms hit, so that the overwhelmed local shelters can focus on helping those displaced by the storms. However, Chicago is our home, and Chicago’s pets are in crisis too. We are in great need of temporary foster homes so that our work helping Chicago’s animals doesn’t slow down while we help these pets too.”
It wasn’t immediately clear if or when the pets would be available for adoption, and PAWS did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for more information.
