Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Celia Rose Gooding is opening up about playing the beloved character Nyota Uhura.
During a July 10 interview with Mr. Will Wong at the Star Trek: SNW Season 3 premiere, Gooding explained they initially felt intimidated when they were cast as Uhura, who was originated by late actress Nichelle Nichols in the original 1960s Star Trek series.
"I think approaching a character that is as beloved as Uhura, that is as established as Uhura, when I first found out that I would be contributing anything to this role, I was really excited," said Gooding during the interview. "And also a little overwhelmed. I knew this legacy this character holds."
In addition, Gooding spoke highly of Nichols, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 89.
"Nichelle Nichols is such a hero of mine. I feel honored that the production team trusted me with her legacy and to be able to contribute pieces of myself and my ability to this character that was so established and well-loved," said Gooding.
Gooding teased what fans can expect from Uhura during the third season of Star Trek: SNW, which premieres on July 17, in a June 2025 interview with Strange New Pod.
"I think in Season 3, audiences are going to see a side of her that they have not seen yet. We get to see a side of her that is in her own. She's literally growing her hair out and letting it down, being herself, and taking up more space," said the 25-year-old. "And I think we haven't seen a lot of that in this character yet. I think we've seen her in this very curious, a little insecure beginnings. And she's finally standing up on her own two feet. And being proud of herself in a way that is so affirming for this character."
Gooding also referenced that Star Trek: SNW is a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series.
"We're seeing the Uhura that audiences fell in love with back in the '60s. And we're constantly growing closer and closer to her," said Gooding.
