Rory McIlroy has revealed he had just four hours sleep after his final round at the Scottish Open.
The world number two jetted to Northern Ireland for this week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush on Sunday.
It comes after he finished tied for second at the Renaissance Club behind Chris Gotterup.
McIlroy had been tied for the lead heading into his final round before finishing two shots adrift on 13-under-par.
Alongside Gotterup and Wyndham Clark, he was part of the last group out on the course in North Berwick.
The trio ended their final round at around 7pm on Sunday night as the American clinched his second PGA Tour victory.
Just 12 hours later, McIlroy had arrived at Portrush for his first practice round at 7am.
He teed off for his solo round two hours before anyone else was on the course.
Explaining his quick turnaround, the five-time major winner said: “Yeah, I got about four hours of sleep, so I’m looking forward to taking a nap after this.
“The last couple of majors, at the PGA and the U.S. Open, the practice rounds take so long.
“I feel like there’s 50 people inside the ropes all the time. I feel like I just can’t get good work done, good preparation.
“I didn’t come up here ahead of time to try to get a couple of practice rounds in, so I just wanted to get out early, sort of beat the rush, beat the crowd, and do my work with not a lot of people around.

It worked out well. Obviously we had that weather delay there, and it was nice to get 18 holes in early and feel like I got a productive day of work in.”
McIlroy already knows Portrush well, having set the course record on the old course as a 16-year-old back in 2005.
Meanwhile, he missed the cut when The Open was last played at the venue in 2019.
On that occasion, his close friend Shane Lowry secured the Claret Jug by six shots ahead of nearest challenger Tommy Fleetwood.
This time around, McIlroy will be hoping to end his 11-year wait for a second Open title.
A win this weekend would also be his first since completing the career Grand Slam.
McIlroy has not tasted victory since his emotional Masters triumph at Augusta National back in April.
Since winning The Open at Royal Liverpool in 2014, he has finished inside the top 10 on five occasions but missed the cut last year at Royal Troon.
