ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the State Department of Health have issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for Eastern Lake Ontario, Central New York, and Western New York regions.
The DEC says the advisory is for fine particulate matter due to the impact of smoke from wildfires in Canada. According to the DEC, fine particulate matter are tiny solid particles, or liquid droplets in the air.
These can cause short-term health effects, including irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and shortness of breath, the DEC says. They also say exposure can worsen medical conditions such as asthma and heart disease.

The advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Monday.
