Lewis Hamilton has acted quickly to respond to doubts over his Ferrari future.
The British Formula 1 great has had a difficult start to life in Italy without a podium finish in a Grand Prix, and rumblings at team principal level have cast further doubt over his future.
Hamilton signed for Ferrari at the start of 2024 in arguably the sport’s biggest ever driver transfer as it united its most successful driver and team.
His former boss at Formula 2 level, Fred Vasseur, was said to have played a huge part in getting the seven-time champion to join him in red, yet his position is now believed to be precarious.
The Frenchman joined the Scuderia in 2023 as their team principal, and although he’s succeeded in cleaning up strategic race weekend failures, the pace of the car appears to be going backwards.
As such, reports in Italy claim he could well be replaced, rumours that have only accelerated due to the availability of the recently sacked Christian Horner, who became one of F1’s most successful-ever executives at Red Bull with eight drivers’ titles.
Yet despite claims that Horner moving to Italy would lead to a Hamilton farewell, the 40-year-old has since responded.
In a rare day full of replying to fans on his Twitter/X account, one of his 8.5million followers wrote: “Don’t you dare leave.”
Hamilton duly responded: “I’m still here.”
Horner is being linked to a string of teams due to his incredible success in F1, but one of the factors that may have led to him getting sacked is very opposed to what Hamilton stands for.
In February 2024 the 51-year-old was accused of ‘inappropriate behaviour’ by a female employee, which he has always denied and was cleared of by two internal investigations.
Yet multiple reports claim it was a factor in his dismissal, while the BBC maintain that the sport’s greatest ever car designer – Adrian Newey – left Red Bull over the allegations.
Hamilton has his say amid claims a Horner arrival would push him out of Ferrari Even with the allegations, Horner is likely to land back in F1 due to his incredible successGettyBefore Horner was cleared by the team, Hamilton said of the situation: “We always have to do more to try and make the sport and the environment that people get to work in feel safe and inclusive and any allegations have to be taken very seriously.
“Obviously we don’t know everything that’s gone on, but it does need to be resolved as it’s hanging over the sport.
“It will be really interesting to see how it’s dealt with moving forwards and the effect that it may or may not have on the sport moving forwards.
“I think it’s a really important moment for the sport to make sure that we stand true to our values.”
Hamilton has long pushed for equality and inclusion in F1, which is one of the reasons why Drive to Survive regular Will Buxton thinks a Horner arrival would be untenable for him.
“If they replaced Fred with Christian Horner, I don’t think Lewis would be a Ferrari driver for much longer,” the pundit said.
A link up between Horner and Hamilton doesn’t make much senseGetty It’s likely this isn’t the last we’ve heard from Horner due to his successes“There have been rumours already this year that he was being courted by Alpine, rumours linking him to Ferrari.
“I think that one’s more of a stretch than the Alpine one. He’s very close with [Alpine advisor] Flavio Briatore. That one would seem to be more logical for me.”
Despite the rumblings, Hamilton has a hefty Ferrari contract through to the end of 2026.
Some of the biggest rule changes the sport has seen come into effect next year, which could well throw the Scuderia back into title contention.
