Former Love Island USA contestant Cierra Ortega is getting candid about the hateful messages she's received since leaving the show.
Earlier this month, Ortega was sent home from the Villa after several old social media posts resurfaced where she was caught using a racial slur. Several days later, she broke her silence in what she called an "accountability video," apologizing for using the slur.
"I want to first start by addressing not just anyone I have hurt or deeply offended — but most importantly, the entire Asian community. I am deeply, truly, honestly so sorry. I had no idea that the word held as much pain, as much harm, and the history that it did, or I never would have used it," Ortega said in an extended video.
Ortega went on to say that at the time, she had no idea of the word's true meaning and once a follower informed her, she immediately apologized and deleted the post.
She also agreed with the network's decision to removed her from the Villa, admitting that she felt she "deserved punishment" for her mistake. She noted that what has been most difficult has been the "way people are approaching family and loved ones" with such hate.

And days after releasing that video, Ortega says the hateful comments have continued, sharing some of the horrific messages she's received online. Messages have ranged from threats of graphic violence to wishes of harm on her family.
"I hope you get raped and abused I will ask God about this every day and pray that you experience it," one particularly awful comment read. Another said, "I hope the Department of Homeland security snatches your Abuela by her throat."

"What should be a collective opportunity to address derogatory language and the harm they carry, has instead snowballed into an excuse for cruelty," Ortega wrote in a follow up post.
She continued, "I have every belief that all this energy can be alchemized into something with real impact. If even a fraction of it was used to uplift the community directly impacted - to continue amplifying Asian voices & their healing-imagine how much further we could be as a collective."
For now, Ortega says she carries "nothing but love" in her heart, despite those that wish her harm and refuses to let misery "find company." She added that she will continue to live with "love, presence and gratitude," especially in these painful moments.
