‘She played terrible’ – Wimbledon legend Serena Williams’ brutally honest double bagel take she couldn’t say

A clip of Serena Williams responding to a hypothetical question on a double bagel win has resurfaced after Saturday’s Wimbledon final.

Iga Swiatek won her first ever women’s singles title at the All England Club with a dominant 6-0 6-0 victory over Amanda Anisimova.

It’s the first time since the start of the Open Era in 1968 that a singles final at Wimbledon ended with a double bagel.

BBC commentator and three-time champion John McEnroe called it a ‘total disaster’ for Anisimova, who was understandably tearful after.

The 23-year-old American gave an emotional post-match interview on Centre Court following the crushing defeat.

Shortly after the final, a video was uploaded on social media in which Williams was asked about media questions straight after matches.

The legendary seven-time singles champion at Wimbledon even gave an example of how to respond to a double bagel win.

“It’s tough,” she told Sean Evans on Hot Ones last July.

“The things you want to say, that automatically pop up in your mind… Like, ‘You win 6-0 6-0, how do you think your opponent played?’

“Well, she played terrible, or else I wouldn’t have won, you know? But you can’t say that.”

The 23-time Grand Slam champion added: “‘Oh well, she did great, I just happened to be on today.’ No, I was way better than her today.”

Williams therefore hinted at showing respect for an opponent, and then gave other examples of how honest she’d have liked to be.

“‘Why did you lose today Serena?’ Well, because I sucked, you know? It wasn’t my day.

“Or, ‘How do you feel about that?’ I feel like punching myself, what do you mean how I feel about that?”

Anisimova beat Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals, becoming only the third player to win against the world no. 1 on all surfaces.

She faced Swiatek for the first time on Saturday but fell to defeat after just 57 minutes of play.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported me since my first round match, you guys have carried me through,” she said after.

“I’ve had a great fortnight, even though I ran out of gas today. I wish I could have put on a better performance for all of you, but you guys have still been there and lifted me up, so thank you so much.”

Swiatek is one step closer to an incredible career Grand SlamGetty

Swiatek on the other hand has now won a sixth Grand Slam title, and is only one Australian Open win away from a career Grand Slam.

The Polish star also win a major at the third time of asking in 2025 after semi-final exits at the Australian and French Opens.
