Play between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon was briefly paused by a champagne cork.
Defending champion Alcaraz won the first set on Centre Court but Sinner showed signs of improvement in the second and led 2-1.
He held advantage during deuce in the fourth game, and was ready to serve and extend his lead in the slightly delayed match.
However, just moments before Sinner threw the ball into the air, an audible pop was sounded by a fan opening a bottle of champagne.
Alcaraz threw his arms in the air in visible frustration, with the cork landing right beside Sinner and then removed by a ball girl. Sinner himself looked completely furious.
Umpire Alison Hughes told the crowd: “Ladies and gentlemen, please don’t pop your champagne corks as the players are about to serve.”
Speaking on ESPN, Wimbledon legend John McEnroe said: “Next-level irritation. At least take the bottle away from that person.”
Champagne is a traditional drink among fans at Wimbledon, and it’s not the first time in 2025 that such an incident took place.
During Emma Raducanu’s first round win over Mimi Xu, a cork flew onto the court in what was an unseen moment in the tournament.
It is said to have landed inside the service box before Raducanu offered it back to the fans.
“I’m glad people were having fun today!” she said afterwards. “I saw a champagne cork fly onto the court so cheers to you!
Luckily for Sinner, Sunday’s champagne pop didn’t appear to faze him as he later won the set to make it 1-1.
