‘You’d be destroyed’ – Shedeur Sanders handed Browns reality check as long-term future dealt major blow by Josh Allen-like QB

Shedeur Sanders finds himself in a position that he is not familiar with – not being the first choice quarterback on his team.

In fact, the son of Hall of Fame defensive back Deion, is currently viewed as fourth on the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback depth chart.

This comes after Sanders – who was projected to be a top first-round pick – suffered an all-time slide to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, where the Browns chose him with the 144th overall pick.

But the 23-year-old wasn’t the only quarterback that the Browns drafted, with Oregon star Dillon Gabriel selected earlier in the third round.

As such, some have touted Gabriel to be one of the leading candidates for the Browns starting role as $230m Deshaun Watson continues to rehab an Achilles tendon injury.

“I was told from somebody that’s in the building, that ain’t a player, it’s really coming down to Kenny Pickett or Dillon Gabriel,” former NFL wide receiver TJ Houshmandzadeh said on the Nightcap podcast.

“That’s what I was told. But now, when you get the reports that Shedeur is completing 7 out of 9 passes, like is it against the starters, or is it against the 3s and 4s – the guys that are going to get released?” the former Cincinnati Bengals wideout further shared.

“So it seems impressive when you see the graphic, but is it really impressive if it’s not against the starters or guys that are going to be on the team.

“You don’t know how they’re dividing up the reps, and it’s virtually impossible with the amount of snaps.”

Houshmandzadeh is not the only player that has an inkling that Pickett or Gabriel will be the starter, with new Browns wide receiver Diontae Johnson expecting Pickett – who just came off a Super Bowl-winning season with the Philadelphia Eagles – to be the name on the start list when week one rolls around.

However, neither player is sitting atop Cleveland’s quarterback depth chart, with that honor so far belonging to veteran Joe Flacco.

Flacco has been touted by the majority of those around the league to be the starter – at the very least – for week one, and former NFL journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick suggests the 40-year-old will only be replaced by Gabriel around the bye week if the Browns are struggling to tally wins.

The Browns have a crowded QB room, with Sanders needing to edge out the three QB’s ahead of him on the depth chartGetty The Browns’ QB rookies are battling away in the hope of making the final 53-man rosterGetty

But what does that mean for Sanders?

Well, it may not exactly be good news for the young star.

It seems unlikely that the Browns will select all four quarterbacks to their final 53-man roster for the season, so somebody is likely going to be cut.

Whether that is Sanders remains to be seen, though he has been shown putting in the hard yards off the field as he bids to wow the Browns’ coaching staff in training camp and preseason.

However, some still have huge doubts about the former Colorado Buffaloes star’s potential to be a success in the NFL, despite some predicting he could work his way to playing at the ‘same level’ as division rivals Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow.

“He’s not Joe Burrow,” AFC North beat reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala said on the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show, via Marca.

“You’ve got a much better chance to win with either Joe Flacco or Kenny Pickett than you do with these two young rookies.”

When asked by former Browns DB Tyvis Powell why Cleveland shouldn’t just give the rookies a chance on the field, Kinkhabwala issued a blunt five-word response: “Because you’d be completely destroyed.”

Some also believe that all four will fail soon and Cleveland will draft a top quarterback in 2026 — that target being Penn State’s Drew Allar, who has been earning ‘Josh Allen comps’ per Cleveland.com’s Dan Labbe.

“The Medina product will be a divisive draft prospect, especially around here if the Browns are in the market for a quarterback,” Labbe wrote.

“At 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, he was earning Josh Allen comps before arriving in Happy Valley. Allar could be the poster child for not being a finished product after two years starting in college and make a leap this season.

“Or he could have Browns fans arguing over if simply being from Northeast Ohio is enough to make him their quarterback of the future.”

With training camp fast approaching, the quarterback situation at the Browns may start to become clearer.

If Sanders does somehow find himself being cut, then the Canadian Football League team the Toronto Argonauts hold his exclusive rights to play there.

The expectation is, though, that in the event that he somehow fails to make the Browns’ final roster, Sanders would likely land with another NFL team before honing his trade in the CFL.
