Scottie Scheffler sarcastically celebrates missed putt at Scottish Open with star ‘frustrated’ on links

Scottie Scheffler has cut a frustrated figure at the Scottish Open this week as his Open preparations have taken a hit.

Scheffler became a three-time major champion by winning the PGA Championship in May and has two other big victories this season.

But he struggled to get into contention at the US Open last month and has been far from his best in the Scottish Open this week.

After beginning his week at The Renaissance Club by eagling his first hole, Scheffler has found it difficult to climb the leaderboard as he usually does.

He heads into Sunday’s final round in a tie for 15th, five shots behind leaders Rory McIlroy and Chris Gotterup.

While he’s far from out of it, his putting in North Berwick has been poor and his frustrations have been on show.

After a brutal lip out on the Par 5 tenth during Saturday’s round, Scheffler sarcastically celebrated his birdie miss by fist punching the air in the direction of the fans.

He was then seen muttering and shaking his head as he trudged towards his ball to tap in for a disappointing par.

He finished his day with a one-under-par 69.

Scheffler’s actions have caught the eye of pundit Trevor Immelman who believes the American superstar is not fully enjoying himself on the British links yet.

But Immelman says he’s seen enough from the world number one to be confident of his chance in Royal Portrush for the 153rd Open Championship next week.

The 2008 Masters champion told CBS Sports: “He seems a little frustrated, but absolutely not anything to panic about for sure.

“I’m not concerned about his chances at all going into The Open.

“He’s still really in a lot of ways still trying to come to grips with links golf, but as I’ve watched him on the range and throughout the course of the last few days, the game still seems there.

“He just needs to tidy up the driver. Off the tee, didn’t really give himself many opportunities, just the five fairways. It’s very hard to be aggressive and attack when you’re constantly coming out of these pot bunkers or the rough.

“I think he’ll probably finish off with a nice strong round on Sunday, work his way into the top 10 at the very least, like we see all the time; the last nine tournaments he’s played, eighth is his worst finish, which just goes to show how incredibly good Scottie Scheffler is.

“I’m not worried about him at all, so you can take it easy on that call, he’s going to be just fine.”

Scheffler resumes his Scottish Open tournament at 12:50pm on Sunday alongside Francesco Laporta and Kristoffer Reitan.

The two-time Masters champion will be hoping for some early birdies to put pressure on the leaders.

Whatever happens on Sunday, Scheffler will head to Portrush as one of the favourites for Open glory.

The 28-year-old is yet to have a realistic chance of claiming the Claret Jug with his best display being his T7 at Royal Troon last year.
