David Morrell got back to winning way but the boxing community weren’t impressed with the decision to award him victory.
Morrell returned on a huge and historic bill headlined by Shakur Stevenson and Hamzah Sheeraz at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York, the traditional home of the US Open tennis tournament.
He took on Imam Khataev in his return to the ring, looking to get his name back in the winning column after losing to David Benavidez in February.
The Cuban knew he had a tough night on his hands, and found himself on the canvas for the first time in his career in the fifth round.
He was dropped by a big right hand and was forced to bite down on his gum shield, rising to his feet and rallying towards the final bell.
Many believed as a conclusion to the bout came at the end of the tenth that Morrell had suffered a second consecutive defeat.
But the final tallies on the judges’ cards saw Morrell pick up an astonishing split decision victory.
Two of the three cards were scored at 96-93 and 95-94 in his favour, while one read 95-94 to his opponent.
Morrell was clearly delighted after a tough evening in the squared circle, but fans came out in their thousands on social media to protest against the decision.
One wrote: “ROBBERY. Khataev won. He hurt Morrell early and threw Morrell all off.
“He caught David all fight with big shots. Dude deserved that win. And he was catching Morrell the WHOLE fight. Round 1 to 10. Disgusting disgusting disgusting.”
Another agreed: “There’s a robbery on every card now, no chance did Morrell win more than 5 rounds.”

At the final bell, it was clear for all to see that it was certainly a close fight.
The Cuban did produce a valiant display from a real moment of bleak fortune.
And he opened the door to an immediate second meeting, given the performance of his No.10 ranked dance partner.
He said in his post-fight interview: “I’m here, I’m back and I feel great.
“It was a good fight, the people are saying rematch. I never said no, I am ready for it.

It is unclear what lays next in the immediate future for Morrell, but he will hope to get his name back in the world title mix.
Benavidez also suggested he’d be open to a sequel with Morrell in the future, given tonight’s victory caused him so many issues in their clash five months ago.
