HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Fairy Godmothers of Rochester wrapped up its second fundraiser of the summer, part of its mission to ensure that everyone has access to a dress for high school prom season.
The formal wear sale took place at the Marketplace Mall in Henrietta on Saturday. Every dollar raised goes toward providing dresses and accessories to high school teens in the area who otherwise couldn’t afford them.
Lead volunteer Kathie Nelkin said she got involved with the nonprofit after donating her two daughters’ dresses. Last year, she got to see a young woman wearing a dress that used to belong to her daughter.
“It’s a great message to my daughters to see what I’ve done with their prom dresses,” Nelkin said. “It’s a pleasure working with these young ladies and seeing them feel like they can’t afford a big, beautiful gown and walking out of here and just knowing that they can have a magical prom.”
The pop-up sales started last year. It’s for clothing that people donated to Fairy Godmothers, but wouldn’t be suitable as a prom dress. Before, the nonprofit would donate the dresses to Goodwill rather than use them for fundraising.
“They can get affordable dresses for $20 that can be anywhere from casual wear to mother of the bride, to bridesmaids, all sorts of things that wouldn’t be appropriate for prom, but we still want to make sure that people have the availability to buy them.”
Nelkin said the money can help to buy dress sizes that they don’t get enough of from donations. Fairy Godmothers is holding two more fundraisers this season at the Marketplace Mall Boutique, on Aug. 9 and Sept. 13. Both run from 10 a.m. to noon. You can learn more here.
