‘Just like Steph’ – Caitlin Clark stat shows clear divide but gamechanger status championed by WNBA hero

Caitlin Clark’s return to the court has not gone exactly as planned.

The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year’s sophomore season has been marred by injury, having missed a pair of five-game stretches due to a quad injury in late May, and a groin injury in June.

Clark has struggled in her sophomore season

Clark’s latest return to action came on Wednesday against the Golden State Valkyries, but she has looked far from productive with her output and the Indiana Fever suffered a blowout loss.

In her last two outings, both at home, the 23-year-old has averaged just 11 points per game, shooting at a mere 31.0 shooting clip and 25.0 percent from beyond the arc.

Having now played 11 of her team’s 20 games, there has been a notable disparity between Clark’s shooting numbers at home versus when she is playing on the road.

According to StatMuse, when playing at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, she has shot 42.0 percent from the field and 40.3 percent from behind the three-point line.

However, on the road Clark has shot below 30 percent from the field – 29.3 percent – and a woeful 3.6 percent from three, averaging 0.3 three-point makes from 7.0 attempts per contest on the road.

With scoring a particular concern as she continues to build back up from injury, the 2025 WNBA All-Star captain has adapted her game by focusing on facilitating her teammates.

Her turnover numbers are also vastly different on the road averaging 6.5 this season to 4.7 – albeit still high – at home.

With 7.5 assists over the last two outings, including nine in the Fever’s win over the Atlanta Dream on Friday, that part of her game continues to thrive.

Furthermore, in Indiana’s 99-82 victory, though she only scored 12 points, Clark’s work elsewhere on the court, including her defense, was notable with her finishing the game with a plus-12.

However, turnovers have very much been a problem for the guard, with her currently leading the league with 5.4 turnovers per contest.

Clark registered two further turnovers on Friday, with one clip going viral as a result of the Fever star calling for the ball, complaining when she didn’t, and then when she did, turning the ball over.

Fans were divided in their reaction, with some criticising Clark’s attitude, whilst others were more analytical and highlighted how her turnovers come as a result of her trying to get her teammates in great positions to score.

“She has no bag work and a suspect handle,” one fan said. “They should move her to a 2 guard and run her off of screens. Let the defense chase her. Either she’ll be open or the defense will overplay her and her teammates will be open.”

However, another fan highlighted what Clark does well, and even likened how she approaches the opposition defense to that of NBA star Stephen Curry.

“She wanted the ball quickly so she can pick up pace, scan for a semi-transition play,” the fan said.

“The turnover in the half court is unrelated. CC does well with players that play her style of ball. Just like Steph.”

Similarly, NFL Network’s Stacey Dales, who was a WNBA All-Star with the Washington Mystics, offered her own analysis of Clark’s game.

“Caitlin Clark forces the issue in a good way so much that she has forced the league to defend differently,” Dales said on X.

“She has single-handedly changed the way players defend on every single play. She has raised the standard, not only for her own teammates, but the opposition.”

There is no doubt that Clark has completely changed the landscape of the WNBA, and that she is a superstar.

But with such popularity comes great criticism when not performing at the level that she has shown in the past, and for now at least, it looks as though she is just stepping back into gear.
