Sense and Sensibility's Marianne Dashwood – famously portrayed on the big screen by Kate Winslet in the 1995 movie – will be played by Hanna and The Sandman star Esmé Creed-Miles.
She will co-lead the new adaptation alongside Normal People actor Daisy Edgar-Jones, who was recently confirmed for the part of Elinor Dashwood, previously played by Emma Thompson.
The remake is being directed by Georgia Oakley (Little Bird) and the script is penned by bestselling author Diana Reid.
Creed-Miles announced the news of her casting on Instagram, sharing an image of herself holding the novel alongside the caption: "Gratitude beyond."
A second picture showed her script alongside Edgar-Jones's.
Creed-Miles is known for her role as the titular Hanna in the series adaptation and recently starred on the big screen in Kristin Stewart's directorial debut The Chronology of Water.
Austen’s Sense and Sensibility has seen a fair few screen adaptations over the decades, each putting its own spin on the Dashwood sisters’ tale of heartbreak, social status and romantic missteps. The most iconic version remains Ang Lee’s 1995 film, starring Thompson and Winslet. The film boastd a starry supporting cast including Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman and scooped many awards.
But long before that Oscar-winning take, penned by Thompson herself, the BBC had already made a habit of adapting Austen’s work. Its 1971 serial starred Joanna David (mother of Downton Abbey’s Emilia Fox) as Elinor and offered a more traditional interpretation. In 2008, the BBC returned to the novel with a fresh three-part miniseries from Pride and Prejudice screenwriter Andrew Davies.
