The seven points that show Carlos Alcaraz is unbeatable at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON – Carlos Alcaraz is forgetting how to lose, with the Spaniard on a 24-match winning run going into Sunday’s final against Jannik Sinner.

At Wimbledon alone, Alcaraz has not lost here since 2022, a feat that has the 22-year-old aiming to become just the fifth men’s player in the Open era to win three straight titles at SW19.

To follow in the footsteps of Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, Alcaraz will have to get the better of Sinner once more.

Alcaraz beat Sinner in an epic French Open final last month, and a repeat is just what these Championships were yearning for.

But can No 1 seed Sinner get his revenge? He will certainly have done his homework since Roland Garros, but with Alcaraz boasting the best record on grass of any ATP player ever (35-3), it is proving the biggest conundrum in the men’s game right now.

Especially when Alcaraz plays points like this…

It was an ominous start on Friday, Alcaraz welcoming Taylor Fritz to his first semi-final at Wimbledon with a trademark drop-shot winner to take the opening point.

Though it did not entirely set the tone for the match – Fritz had his moments and took the second set – it was just 10 seconds in when Alcaraz had his opponent on the run and unable to get there before the second bounce.

    2. The Di Caprio seal of approval

Every angle covered. Alcaraz lured Fritz forward again towards the end of the opening set and ultimately sent the No 5 seed sprawling with an angled shot at the net that had to be perfect.

It was, and left Leonardo Di Caprio among the 15,000 inside Centre Court looking mightily impressed.

Alcaraz’s drop shot is difficult to read and means he has his opponents on strings.

He knows they fear it, and knows how to counter when they predict what’s coming.

Midway through the fourth set against Fritz, he anticipated the American coming forward, and what looked to be a drop shot suddenly became a forehand winner with depth.

The master of deception can still deceive when he is already deceiving. Deceive-ception, if we want to keep the Di Caprio theme running.

    4. Defence to attack in a flash

When Alcaraz puts his finger to his ear, calling for the crowd to raise the noise level, you know he enjoyed the point.

In his fourth-round match against Andrey Rublev on Sunday, Alcaraz was on the backfoot, stretching to his right and then to his left to keep the point alive.

Rublev was doing everything right, but when sending Alcaraz back chasing to his right again, somehow the Spaniard whipped in a forehand cross-court winner to break at a crucial moment – midway through the third set after they had shared the first two.

Alcaraz was monstrous on serve against Fritz, winning 100 per cent of his first-serve points in both the first and third set.

He almost went toe-to-toe with Fritz on aces as well, a tall order given the five-inch height difference and the American’s reputation, with one of Alcaraz’s 13 aces a second serve out wide in the third set. Clutch when it matters.

    6. Rocket man

Alcaraz is not afraid to bring the power, even – or especially – when under pressure. At 0-15 down, 5-5 in the fourth set against Fritz he produced two rocket forehands as part of a destructive one-two blow.

He went on to hold, and then saved two set points in the tie-break to deny Fritz a decider.

    7. The serve and volley throwback

The longer a point goes on, the more likely Alcaraz is going to win it, as was the case against Fritz.

However, that does not prevent him from looking to finish points quickly, and on Friday he serve and volleyed 20 times – winning 16 of those points.

Rolling back the years to the Wimbledon of old, Alcaraz was similarly efficient against Cameron Norrie in the quarters – 18 out of 20 – and when serving for the set he had the Briton bamboozled, sending him wide, tempting him back in and then wrongfooting Norrie with a deft volley out back wide again.

Of the players in the men’s draw to have serve and volleyed more than 20 times at these Championships (18 players in total), Alcaraz boasts the best win percentage on these points at 79 per cent.
