Glenn Sutton Sr. is mourning the loss of his son, Glenn Sutton Jr., and his nephew, Nasir Anderson, who were struck by a driver on Lake Avenue in April.
“After losing my son and losing my nephew and seeing all these other people getting killed out there on Lake Avenue, something needs to be done,” Sutton said.
Mayor Evans addressed Lake Avenue as one of the deadliest stretches of road in the state during a press conference on Tuesday, highlighting the problem of speeding and motorcycle deaths.
“Lots of speeding takes place on Lake Avenue. There have been various motorcycle deaths this year that have happened on Lake Avenue,” Evans said.
The city launched the ROC Vision Zero plan last year to address traffic safety challenges, focusing on Lake Avenue. The initiative involves collaboration with state and county partners.
“As we continue to sharpen our Vision Zero program and our traffic enforcement and design, Lake Avenue will continue to be a major focus of our administration,” Evans said.
Sutton expressed hope for the future. “I am very happy that the mayor and the city of Rochester are going to be doing something with Lake Avenue. I’m hoping sooner rather than later,” he said.
Mayor Evans plans to provide a major update on the Vision Zero program in the coming months.
