SAN DIEGO – All-League boys and girls teams, All-CIF titles, and a pair of All-Americans – these accomplishments were part of the 2025 Point Loma High swim team.
Leading the honors were sophomore speedster Alex Pletcher and junior girls standout McKenna Carroll, both of whom were named members of the 2024-2025 National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association All-American Team. This honor recognizes the top 100 swimmers in their events nationwide.
Pletcher ranked 10th in the country in the 200 Free and 30th in the 100 Free, where his best time was 44.19 seconds. Carroll ranked 59th in the 200 Free with a time of 1:49.38.
But there were plenty of their teammates who also gathered All-League and All-CIF honors by placing among the top finishers in each event.
At the San Diego City Conference Championships for girls, senior Sienna Borchert (500 Free) and freshman Bree Carroll (100 Fly) joined Carroll (200 IM and 100 Back) as All-Leaguers.
On the boys’ side, Pletcher won the 200 Free and 100 Fly, earning All-League honors. Pletcher was joined by junior Leon Chen, sophomore AJ Bockstahler, and senior Andrew Bockstahler to earn All League as part of the 200 Free and 400 Free Relay teams.
Next up was the local CIF Div. II boys meet where Pletcher won the 200 and 100 Free. Chen placed in the breaststroke while the boys won the 200 Free Relay in a time of 1:25.29. In the girls’ meet, Carroll won the 200 Free and finished second in the 100 Free.
At the state CIF boys meet in Clovis, Pletcher finished second in the 200 Free but set an all-time San Diego CIF record time of 1:35.63 in doing so. The boys 200 Free Relay team then broke the San Diego CIF Div. II record with a time of 1:24.97 (the old record was 1:25.01). Among girls, Carroll finished 12th at state.
The team’s accomplishments were celebrated by first-year head coach Maria Zello, who stepped up after serving two years as assistant coach. Andrew Barrows also served his first year as assistant coach.
