For decades, the great myth was that "Yoko Ono broke up the Beatles." Ono, who married John Lennon in 1969, bore the brunt of the blame for the Beatles' breakup for years, even up to Peter Jackson's award-winning docuseries, The Beatles: Get Back, in November 2021.
The series documented the making of the Beatles' Let It Be. It was a contentious recording session that saw the bonds between Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr fall apart. One of the issues was how McCartney reacted to Ono in the studio, specifically when singing the chorus to "Get Back" ("Get back to where you once belonged."

"The song 'Get Back,' when you were recording, Yoko was in the studio and every time you sang 'Get Back,' John accused you of staring at Yoko and he took it as an insult," Howard Stern said to Sir Paul in January 2022, two months after Get Back premiered on Disney+.
With the recent news that McCartney's "Got Back" tour is returning to the U.S., this interview has come back into the spotlight.
"Those were very paranoid times, you know," began McCartney when explaining the tension between him and Lennon. But he did admit there was some truth to John's accusation.
"Let's face it; we didn't welcome Yoko into the studio. Because we thought it was a 'guy thing,'" he said. "I mean…wives and girlfriends weren't really welcome in the studio. They could [pop in] the control room for a quick visit. But actually, sit in the studio with us? It was like, 'no. Excuse me. We're working.'"

When Stern asked if McCartney had the "guts" to bring this up to Lennon, Paul admitted he didn't. "It was kind of obvious, though." Stern pointed out that the "passive aggressive" approach of "just sniping" at everyone wasn't healthy. "We were just fuming and sulking," admitted McCartney "'Excuse me, that's my amp.' She couldn't use the stool? … It was mind-blowing."
But once the shock wore off, McCartney said he and the other Beatles came to their senses. "We suddenly sort of thought, ' you know what? John's in love with this girl. If he wants to bring her into the studio, we've got to cope with that.' And we learned to cope with it. And I now feel that he had the right to do that."
"It might have been better if he'd been a little bit more diplomatic and said, 'Hey guys, I really love her, and I just want to be near her all the time.' And we had to figure it out, and we did, eventually, but it took some time. And there was a few looks [going] on," said Sir Paul.
Stern also brought up how McCartney later changed his tune about Yoko, saying she was Lennon's muse and instrumental in his solo career.
"With the Beatles, we came full circle," he said. "When we broke up, it was the right time for us to break up. And he found…his muse. And she was taking him in a completely new direction, something avant-garde, all stuff we liked, that we'd admired in other people, but suddenly, he had to ride on this bus."
American fans will get a chance to hear McCartney play some of his classic songs when his "Got Back" Tour comes back to the States. There's just a catch: he's not playing in every town.
