Nearly one week after getting engaged, Becca Tilley and Hayley Kiyoko are sharing all the details.
“Just trying to surprise Becca is just, like, beyond,” Kiyoko, 34, quipped on the Thursday, July 10, episode of Tilley’s “Scrubbing In” podcast. “I’ve never surprised her. It’s really hard to surprise her because she’s super intuitive [and] a smart cookie.”
Tilley, 36, and the musician have been together for seven years and recently went on a trip to Mallorca, Spain, earlier in July.
“I always thought I would be the first to propose, so I went on the trip [with] several friends being like, ‘Are y’all getting engaged? Are you proposing?’” Tilley recalled. “I was like, ‘No, you guys. It’s just a vacation. We go on trips all the time, and I don’t even have a ring or anything.’ So, when I tell you I had absolutely no clue, it wasn’t even a thought in my mind going into the trip.”

Kiyoko, meanwhile, meticulously planned the entire getaway, making sure they each packed their best outfits and both got a pre-trip manicure.
“Her dream is to go to Mallorca during high season with beautiful weather,” Kiyoko said. “My mission [was] to find turquoise water [and] a beach with no one around.”
Kiyoko told Tilley that morning that she wanted to visit a beach favored by the locals, so they went to one previously scouted by Kiyoko’s tour photographer early one morning. (Kiyoko, however, didn’t realize it was a “nudist” beach and thus discovered “a sea of penises” in the background of their engagement portraits.)
“I had a sun bucket hat on and sunglasses, and she just takes the hat off of me,” Tilley recalled. “She takes my sunglasses, and I’m like, ‘Why?’ She’s not saying anything.”
Kiyoko, for her part, pointed out that she had a camera set up and was completely focused on her proposal plans to say anything else.

“I don’t say anything to her because I was just, like, at this point, I’m making no excuses,” Kiyoko said, going to take the ring box out of her purse.
Tilley also saw her fiancée start breaking down in tears in that moment.
“She’s already crying, and I’m so overwhelmed because it was so unexpected,” Tilley said. “I was so overwhelmed and trying to be present. She said amazing things to me … about, like, ‘I’ll keep you safe and I’ll be your safe [place],’ just beautiful things that have always made me feel, like, she was my person. Then, she got down on a knee and asked me to marry her, and I said yes.”
Kiyoko popped the question with a one-of-a-kind bauble from Ring Concierge.

“I was unsure what ring she wanted exactly, and so I worked with Ring Concierge to, basically, pretend that she was being offered gifted jewelry,” Kiyoko said. “I had them DM Becca, like, ‘Hey, we’re gifting free jewelry for Pride [Month]. Come into the store.’”
She added, “They don’t normally have engagement rings out at the store, so they had the rings out, and [my friend and I] brought Becca there. The goal was to figure out what diamond she wanted. She’s just having a blast, and the woman who was working also wasn’t in on it.”
Kiyoko ultimately picked out an elongated cushion-cut ring with a hidden halo.
“She did a very good job,” Tilley gushed. “It fit perfectly… and it was magical, and then we jumped into the clear, blue water.”
