Rock Legends Stolen Guitar Found 50 Years Later: Report

Rock legend Mick Taylor allegedly had his Les Paul guitar stolen more than 50 years ago when he was recording with the Rolling Stones, according to Page Six. Taylor, who was with the band from 1969 to 1974, reportedly lost the guitar when it was stolen in a robbery.

Flash forward to 2025, and it seems as though the allegedly stolen guitar may have resurfaced. In May, The Met announced that it had received a "landmark gift" that included more than 500 "of the finest guitars from the golden age of American guitar making, spanning the years 1920 to 1970."

Among those guitars were iconic instruments previously belonging to some rock and roll greats, like Roy Rogers and Keith Richards. And, according to Taylor's manager, the same guitar once owned and played by Richards may actually be Taylor's stolen guitar. The reason? Richards was the person who sold the guitar to Taylor many years ago and that particular guitar is said to be part of the "gift" that showed up at the Met.

"There are numerous photos of Mick Taylor playing this Les Paul, as it was his main guitar until it disappeared. The interesting thing about these vintage Les Pauls (from the late 1950s), is that they are renowned for their flaming . . . which is unique, like a fingerprint," Taylor’s manager Marlies Damming explained, per Page Six.

According to Ground Guitar, there are a few other theories about what happened to Taylor's guitar apart from the reports that it was stolen. Regardless of which theory one believes, it seems as though the mystery of the guitar's whereabouts has been resolved some 50+ years later. What really happened to the guitar over the last 50 years is something we may never really know.

The Rolling Stones, currently consisting of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood still tour across the globe.
