Atalanta demand £50m+ for Newcastle and Man Utd target ...Middle East

Giorgio Scalvini is understood to be flattered by interest from Newcastle United but it would take an offer north of £50m to even begin a conversation with Atalanta.

Newcastle wrapped up a £52m move for Anthony Elanga on Friday and are now focusing on bringing in a striker to replace Callum Wilson ahead of the new season. 

But that is running parallel with attempts to broker a deal for a blue chip centre-back capable of taking the Magpies up a level.

Newcastle see Italy international Scalvini, who they have a long-term interest in, as someone who fits the bill.

The i Paper understands that Newcastle have carried out preliminary work on a possible deal, but the 21-year-old also has interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Juventus and a host of Serie A clubs who have been monitoring him for several years.

Although no formal price tag has been put on Scalvini, well-placed sources have told The i Paper it would take £50m plus to get Atalanta around the table. 

Given Newcastle’s budget, based largely on their headroom within the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules, is around £150m, they may be reliant on player trading themselves to make that work.

But a deal is not viewed as impossible, with the player himself intrigued by the possibility of playing in the Premier League and open to a move to St James’ Park, where Italy teammate Sandro Tonali has flourished since moving from AC Milan.

The Newcastle midfielder is understood to have spoken in glowing terms about the club and manager Eddie Howe while away on international duty recently.

Atalanta have a successful player trading model that has leant heavily on cashing in on star assets who have graduated from their academy.

But they are also now regulars in the Champions League, which has strengthened their hand when confronted with interest in their best players.

The i Paper has been told that Atalanta are keen to open negotiations over a new contract with Scalvini this summer, with the defender’s current deal not due to expire until 2028.

Sources believe they are under no pressure to sell and ideally want to keep him, which is why his valuation is so high.

But there is also a feeling at Newcastle that with Scalvini having played only eight times last season, this summer might represent the last window of opportunity to sign him before his value skyrockets.

Having finally landed the right-sided forward they have been prioritising for 18 months, Howe now wants to bring in a striker and centre-back.

The need for a defender is acute despite having four senior players in that position.

Sven Botman is an outstanding player but has been plagued by injuries, while Jamaal Lascelles didn’t play a minute last season, although he did return from a cruciate ligament injury in May.

Newcastle agreed new contracts for Dan Burn and Fabian Schar in the last year and both played some of their best football last season, but there is an acceptance internally that there needs to be a succession plan with the pair aged 33.

The Magpies have other targets, with Marseille defender Leonardo Balerdi and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on the club’s wish list.

Interest in the latter has receded of late, although the club are monitoring events at Selhurst Park.
