Severe weather threatens Chicago area; hail, flooding, tornadoes all possible

Hours after severe storms swept through Illinois overnight leading to an O’Hare Airport ground stop and an evacuation at Chicago’s popular Windy City Smokeout festival, more severe weather chances were on the way Friday, with threats of of tornadoes, flooding, hail and heavy downpours.

The severe weather risk comes as heavy rain pounded Chicago early Friday, leading to multiple crashes and flooded roads.

On DuSable Lake Shore Drive at North Avenue, photos and video showed an underpass partly underwater was creating dangerous driving conditions. According to the ComEd Outage Map, nearly 3,000 people across the Chicago area were without power.

As of 6:15 a.m., radar showed rain and storms moving to the east, with some pockets of wet weather across parts of Chicago and Northwest Indiana. NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes noted a line of heavy rain across Iowa was set to move into Illinois, but some forecast models showed it weakening.

“It’s not out of the question that it holds together and brings us more thunderstorms this afternoon,” Jeanes warned, as scattered showers continued to rain down on the Eisenhower expressway.

    Severe weather timeline

While dry time was expected later Friday morning and into the afternoon, severe weather chances ramp up around 3 p.m. By around 5 p.m., the entire Chicago area will be at a “slight” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two of five, Jeanes said. Those storms bring threats of golf-ball sized hail, heavy downpours, strong winds and even brief tornadoes.

“The biggest threat being wind damage,” Jeanes said. “But flash flooding is possible, and there’s a slight risk of tornadoes — can’t rule that out.”

Storm chances run through 11 p.m. Friday.

Friday will also see humid conditions, Jeanes said, with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s but “feels-like” temperatures in the low 90s.

Saturday will be another humid day, Jeanes said, with more scattered storms possible. According to the NWS, the highest chance for stormy weather will be in the afternoon, east of I-55.

Sunday looks to be a drier and less humid day, forecast models showed.
