Watch: Dinesh Karthik hammers Rishabh Pant!! Shows Dhruv Jurel mirror

Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik lauded young wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel for his impressive catch to dismiss England batter Ollie Pope on Day 1 of the third Test at Lord’s on Thursday, July 10. Karthik stated that Jurel has a better technique than regular wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.

Rishabh Pant sustained a finger injury while wicketkeeping during the ongoing day. The 27-year-old, who has been in excellent batting form, required medical treatment after hurting his finger. While the injury was not deemed serious, Pant was replaced by Dhruv Jurel as the wicketkeeper later in the day.

After tea on Day 1, Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Ollie Pope with a delivery that spun sharply away. Pope played a good-length ball outside off with hard hands, and Dhruv Jurel reacted swiftly to complete an excellent catch. The dismissal ended a solid 109-run stand between Pope (44) and Joe Root.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Rishabh Pant injured his left index finger during the 34th over of England’s innings while keeping to Jasprit Bumrah.

Pant remains under medical supervision, with Jurel taking over wicketkeeping duties. The 27-year-old was involved in two dismissals on Day 1, but he has had an inconsistent series behind the stumps, missing several key chances in the first two Tests.

Dhruv Jurel Has Picked Up a Very Nice Catch - Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik analyzed Dhruv Jurel’s catch on Sky Sports and pointed out a key technical difference between the two keepers. Karthik said that Jurel’s position gives him better control and positioning compared to Rishabh Pant.

“Dhruv Jurel has picked up a very nice catch coming in as a sub for Rishabh Pant. I am just trying to understand and dissect his technique a little bit, which is little different to Rishabh Pant. And if you have a look at the video, it’s on the split screen at both Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel," Karthik told Sky Sports.

“Have a look at Pant’s glove position, facing the bowler where Dhruv Jurel, a lot more lower and coming out, and how do you check the height of the glove in relation with the keeping pad. Dhruv Jurel is a lot more lower, closer to the keeping pads and the height of it compared to Rishabh Pant,” he added.

Rishabh Pant Moves Away from the Ball - Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik said that Jurel’s stable right leg position helped keep his head aligned with the ball, allowing for cleaner glove work. Karthik pointed out that Pant tends to place more weight on his left leg while finishing a catch, which disrupts balance.

“As you roll this forward, the one thing you’ll see is balance. Why was Dhruv Jurel able to collect it cleanly. Just have a look at the right leg. The position of the right leg in many ways determines how well your head position is in relation to the glove," Karthik continued.

"So, Rishabh Pant, as the ball comes close to him, sometimes gets up high and moves away from the ball whereas Dhruv Jurel’s glove and head position is very much in line with the ball being right in the middle of his hands.”

“Have a look at Rishabh Pant’s end position here in front. Right leg completely different. A lot of weight on the left leg, whereas Dhruv Jurel, a lot more balanced while taking the catch, which has enabled him to take a really hard catch and make it look rather easy,” he added.

Pant’s injury has raised concerns for India, especially with the batting. The left-hander has been in excellent form, scoring 134, 118, 25, and 65 in the first two Tests at Headingley and Edgbaston.

Meanwhile, Jurel made his Test debut in 2024. The 24-year-old has scored 202 runs in four Tests at an average of 40.40. He was named Player of the Match in the Ranchi Test for scores of 90 and an unbeaten 39.
