Paul Finebaum blasted Deion Sanders after the Colorado head coach proposed a college football salary cap during Big 12 Media Days, claiming that Coach Prime only brought it up because he didn’t feel his team could stay competitive without Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders.
“You got a guy that’s not that darn good, but he could go to another school and they give him a half million dollars and you can’t compete with that. And it don’t make sense,” Sanders said on Wednesday. “The team that pays the most is going to win.”
That caught the attention of Finebaum, who left no doubt where he stood on the comments during Thursday’s “First Take”.
“I find it just a tad bit interesting and maybe a slight bit hypocritical that Deion Sanders, after his two great players … in terms of Travis Hunter, one of the best players in modern college football history, as (he and Shedeur Sanders) depart, suddenly Deion wants the cap.”
Finebaum noted that if a salary cap had been in place in prior years, it would have been difficult for the Buffaloes to land a player like Hunter in the first place, considering how much he’d have been worth.
“Would Deion have been in favor of a cap then? Of course not,” Finebaum said. “Deion is simply trying to tell the media, hey, let’s talk about something other than my football team, which is going to be painfully boring and perhaps even mediocre this year.”
For what it’s worth, Colorado is being picked at the bottom half of the Big 12 by many major media outlets, with many clearly agreeing with Finebaum’s assessment that without Hunter and Shedeur Sanders in the fold, the shine will come off of Deion Sanders’ time in Boulder.
