Big Brother kicked off its 27th season with a 90-minute premiere full of twists and turns. Sixteen new houseguests checked into the “Hotel Mystere,” and were thrown for a loop almost immediately when Julie Chen Moonves disappeared in a blackout. A series of competitions that found the veteran host, restored the power of Head of Household and subsequently gave the all-important power to the first houseguest of the season. But the biggest event was saved for last.
In announcing the “Summer of Mystery” theme, CBS teased that Big Brother 27 would introduce a surprise “Mystery Houseguest” as a 17th player this season. Throughout the week, the Big Brother Instagram account has sent a variety of cryptic clues through various photos of the house. And tonight, we finally saw who all those clues pointed to: Big Brother legend and champ Rachel Reilly.

Rachel was added to the season courtesy of the “Mastermind,” a masked man introduced as the main antagonist of the season in the premiere. In his video message to the houseguest, he revealed he would not be taking something from the game this time, but adding something in. Then, on cue, Rachel walked out from behind a false door, standing at the landing of the stairs in a decadent red dress, Miss Scarlet-style.
“Floaters, grab a life vest!" she bellowed. "Reality royalty has arrived."
Rachel then descended the stairs to a rapturous reaction from the other houseguests. The players began chanting "Rachel" to welcome the legend back into the house. Though in the confessionals, there were clearly many more reservations about having to compete against her for a chance at the win.

After taking her seat as a late check-in, the Mastermind informed the houseguests that, indeed, Rachel would be a player this season. However, she would actually be the 16th player rather than the 17th. That's because, in a nod to Rachel's debut season, a saboteur-like accomplice had been working with the Mastermind to trip up the other houseguests. It's up to the cast – now including Rachel – to decide who that accomplice is. If they get it wrong, they will also join the group.
Reilly hit our screens in memorable fashion upon her reality TV debut in Big Brother 12. She made an immediate splash, showcasing her capacity to “showmance,” win competitions and cause conflict. After she and future husband Brendon Villegas became the house target for the first month of the game, Rachel was evicted in ninth place. Though a short run, it was an eventful one, filled with instantly iconic quotes like, “I am Vegas,” and, of course, “Floaters, grab a life vest!”
It was only one year before we saw Rachel re-enter the house once more, this time alongside Brendon and four other returning players. Despite being outnumbered by newbies, Rachel was able to secure her safety by surrounding herself with her fellow veterans, as well as continuing to rake in the competition wins. Despite losing her tightest allies, including Brendon not once, but twice, Rachel made it to the final day of the game. And so, one mere year after branded one of the most polarizing houseguests in recent memory, Rachel left the game $500,000 richer.
Since her time on Big Brother, Rachel has added a number of reality TV shows to her résumé. That includes a whopping three seasons of The Amazing Race, making it to the final leg two times alongside Brendon. And she got her fair share of mystery on the first season of Peacock's The Traitors, trying to suss out treachery in a Scottish castle. We shall see if those sleuthing skills will come in handy as she battles yet again against another cast of new players.
