Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash (real name Saul Hudson) has always been known for his epic guitar riffs in songs like “Paradise City” and “November Rain,” but neither are what he considers the hardest song to play live. Instead, that honor goes to “Estranged” from Use Your Illusion II.
“The most challenging guitar is ‘Estranged’. Playing that live, it demanded a lot of concentration,” Slash said during an interview with Amp Archives. “It’s not your typical turn-up-the-volume and crank it out kind of thing. It took a lot of concentration to get the nuances throughout that whole song. There’s a lot of arrangements going on in there, so that was definitely the most challenging.”
The tune is a nearly-10-minute-long power ballad and features three complex guitar solos. Released in 1991, “Estranged” was the third installment in Guns ‘N Roses’ music video trilogy after “Don’t Cry” and “November Rain.” Use Your Illusion II took the group’s music in a different direction as they experimented with orchestral arrangements and piano intros, along with focusing on more of a storytelling approach with their songs, a stark contrast from Appetite for Destruction.
However, Use Your Illusion I and II, were two albums Slash said he was “obsessed with” when they were being recorded, and he credited his obsession with how much touring had taken out of him and the rest of the group.
"I was just totally obsessed with the creation of the Illusion records and when I got into that studio, I was completely absorbed with everything to do with them, all the time. Because it had been so long,” the legendary rock star told Total Guitar in 2011. "We'd made Appetite [For Destruction] and then toured for years and - for me, and I know for a couple of the other guys - we'd crashed and burned. So we were pulling ourselves out of the f--king quagmire and going back to work."
