All staff and visitors at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park were being evacuated Thursday as fire crews worked to control two wildfires burning on opposite ends of the national park.
The park, 14 miles northeast of Montrose, is closed until further notice, the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention Control said in a post on social media at about 1:20 p.m.
One of the fires is burning near the south entrance of the park and the other is near the north rim. Both were sparked by lightning, the agency said.
A state fire engine is responding to the fire on the north side, the agency said, and Colorado State Patrol was called to help evacuate the campgrounds in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Forest area.
No size estimates were immediately available.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
