A new contender challenges Six Flags Magic Mountain for Coaster Capital of the World

Thrill seekers will face nature’s wrath when they board a new coaster that will shoot them out of the top of man-made mountain with a fiery pyrotechnic blast on a record-setting ride debuting at an amusement park vying for the coveted title of Coaster Capital of the World.

The new AlpenFury roller coaster will open on Saturday, July 12 at the Canada’s Wonderland amusement park just north of Toronto.

AlpenFury will be the park’s 19th coaster — pulling Canada’s Wonderland into a tie for second place with Poland’s Energylandia for the most coasters in a single park. Six Flags Magic Mountain remains the Coaster Capital of the World with 20 coasters and another on the way.

The backstory for the AlpenFury coaster harks back to the AlpenFest themed land that was once part of Canada’s Wonderland.

Riders aboard the Premier Sky Rocket coaster will board a sleek, modern sled in an alpine village and travel along closed climbing trails to the mountain’s core where the combination of fire and ice generate a powerful mystical force, according to the ride’s backstory.

AlpenFury riders waiting in the coaster’s queue will find themselves thrust into a jubilant and colorful village festival celebrating Wonder Mountain’s mythical union of ice and fire.

The new coaster coming to Canada’s Wonderland promises to be a powerful draw for ride enthusiasts looking for the latest and greatest thrills.

AlpenFury will boast nine inversions — more than any coaster in North America and the most in the world for a launch coaster.

The dual-launch coaster will send riders hurtling toward a cavern in the base of Wonder Mountain before transitioning to a vertical stretch of track that will send them rocketing toward the mountain’s peak at 72 mph.

Pyrotechnics will blast from the top of Wonder Mountain as each coaster train exits near the summit and climbs into a 164-tall twisting Top Hat element.

The lineup of head-spinning inversions on AlpenFury will include a trio of one-of-a-kind elements that sound like the menu specials at a sushi restaurant.

The inverted Top Hat element with a 270-degree flip and a heartline roll has been dubbed the Fire Serpent Roll.

The Ice Winder Roll will add a twist to the classic double barrel roll with a banking 45-degree turn and downdrop finish.

The treble clef-shaped Skyflyer Loop will incorporate an ascending helix with a zero-G stall and an inverting, descending roll.

Canada’s Wonderland crews have been busy modifying Wonder Mountain — the park’s iconic landmark since opening day in 1981 — with new foundations, structural steel and rockwork to accommodate AlpenFury’s path that will tunnel through the man-made peak.

AlpenFury will interact with three other coasters that already call Wonder Mountain home — the 1981 Thunder Run, 1991 Vortex and 2014 Wonder Mountain’s Guardian.

The new coaster’s 3,280-foot-long track will span the park and encounter a series of head-chopper and near-miss moments.

The custom-designed Sky Rocket has become a workhorse for Baltimore-based Premier Rides since the first version of the coaster was installed at Pennsylvania’s Kennywood in 2010.

Closer to home, Premier Sky Rocket coasters can be found at Six Flags Magic Mountain (Full Throttle), SeaWorld San Diego (Electric Eel) and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (Superman Ultimate Flight).

Canada’s Wonderland will offer early ride times on AlpenFury for season passholders on July 13, 19, 20 and 27 and Aug. 1, 8, 24 and 31.
