It's been just over three years since audiences last saw Michael C. Hall's sympathetic psychopath Dexter Morgan. Yet with the upcoming release of Paramount+ with Showtime on July 11, viewers will once again glory in the hyper-violent crimes of Hall's antihero in Dexter: Resurrection.
A sequel series to Showtime's original Dexter and its subsequent TV continuation Dexter: New Blood, Dexter: Resurrection follows Hall's character as he recovers from the gunshot injury he sustained at the hands of his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott).
Once again returning to prime health, Dexter sets out in search of his missing son, all the while dodging his former friend and fellow law enforcement officer, Angel Batista (David Zayas).
Though some viewers might be skeptical of Dexter's continued misadventures almost 20 years since the original series first aired on Showtime, Dexter: Resurrection's critical reviews have been nothing short of positive.
"The first four episodes of Dexter: Resurrection give us a new setting, a new hero, a parade of fun guest stars, and – most importantly – a compelling reason for Dexter being back at all," said IGN's Matt Fowler.
Indeed, the delicate balance callbacks to the original series and the show's newer features, have all earned rave reviews from critics.
"Those little flourishes — the new setting, the old humor, the new killers (who are just goofy enough to evoke the excellent killers of old) — are enough of a hook to reward anyone still eager to engage with their favorite aughts era mass murderer," said IndieWire's Ben Travers.
While some entertainment reporters felt the series negated many of the important narrative events of New Blood, they also emphasized the undeniable appeal of Resurrection's new storyline, albeit with a mix of skeptical optimism.
"All of the grounding and clarity of purpose that carried Dexter: New Blood is gone, but if the version of Dexter that you enjoy was already borderline cartoonish there’s entertainment to be found here," said The Hollywood Reporter's Daniel Feinberg.
