ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State Police have shared body-worn camera video showing troopers helping an older woman to get outside of a burning apartment building in Albany.
According to our Albany NBC affiliate, police determined that the fire started after someone fired a flare gun into the building on Madison Avenue on the night of Thursday, July 4. Watch the video of the evacuation and rescue here:
Police also responded to a shooting outside the building, finding four people with gunshot wounds, including a 17-year-old hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the head.
The video shows troopers entering the burning building to evacuate residents because of the heavy smoke and flames. Trooper Thomas Stiehler can be seen helping the woman to get down several flights of stairs, then reentering the building to ensure that no one was inside any other apartments.
Troopers James McGill and Zachary Deaprix are also credited with helping to evacuate people and searching the building. The video shows flaming debris falling from the window just as troopers were leaving the building.
Albany Police also responded to the fire and shooting. Both remain under investigation.
