Blue Lakes- It has been a month since the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has last planted Blue Lakes with trout. There has been a decent amount of rainbows that have been caught the past few months, and there are still a bazillion yet to be caught. The trout are up on the surface feeding early in the morning and the last hour of daylight. Other than that, the trout are down in the deeper water. If you are fishing from the shore, make long casts and fish off of the bottom. Powerbait, worms and night crawlers have been working well. Trollers have been hooking into trout at 25 to 30 feet deep using a down rigger. Try pulling an Action Disk with a wooly bugger, castmaster or super duper.
Clearlake- The bass fishing has now settled into a more predictable pattern. Early morning hours are the best time to fish, since during the evening hours you may have to deal with the wind. I have heard that the top water bite has finally begun for the summer. Also, pitching frogs over weed mats are starting to produce strikes. The word is that fishing the tules and weed mats from Lakeport to the State Park has been pretty good. Successful anglers have been fishing a jig, brushhog, or sweet beaver, casting it into holes near the base of the tules. Also some fishermen have had some luck drop-shottin’ or twitching a fluke along the weed lines. After the sun comes up and the temperature begins to rise, move to fishing docks with a weightless Senko or jig.
Mendocino Coast- There’s no doubt the salmon closure has left a huge void in our saltwater season that can’t be filled. There’s really nothing that compares to the thrill, taste, and the tradition of salmon fishing off of our coast. However, if the halibut and rockfish continue to chew up baits like they are now, it will certainly lessen the sting.
I hate to be a “Negative Nelly” but, the way things are going , I just don’t ever see the salmon fishing season being what it was again. The ship has sailed and all we have are the good memories.
Lake Sonoma – I have been receiving some pretty good reports from my friends down in Sonoma County. The top water bite has begun to pick up with the first and last hours of daylight being the best times. Try drop shottin’ a Margarita Mutilator Roboworm out in the flats in five to twelve feet of water. Also try chuckin’ a spinnerbait or crackbait. The best places to fish right now are Cherry Creek, Yorty Creek and Skunk Creek.
Lake Mendocino- You know I learned something the other day when Teresa and I were on our home lake. It was a hot afternoon and everyone was out pounding the water (any sane angler would not be fishing during this time). We tucked our boat into a cove on the west side of the lake. The shoreline was muddy, this is when I discovered that the bass (both large and smallmouth) were using the mud cloud to hide so they could ambush shad. So we threw green Sweet Beavers slowly dragging them through the mud line. Wouldn’t you know, we caught six bass in about an hour. Fun!
Lake Pillsbury – The word is that the bass and trout fishing has been petty good. Many bass are being caught at Sunset Camp and the log jam area, Turtle Cove and Oak Flat. Also some nice trout are being caught during the morning hours trolling the west side of the lake.
Also, if you find a school of Squaw Fish you can easily hook into twenty to thirty of them. They are traveling together like a “wolf pack”. Once again, these fish are NOT fish that you practice “catch and release” with. Throw them up on the shore.
