AUSTIN (KXAN) -- We're drying out after storms in the Hill Country produced more than 4 inches of rain in parts of Llano County along with heavy rain in the Austin metro producing some 1-2" rainfall totals after midday.
CENTRAL TEXAS RAINFALL TOTALSThe heavy rain in the Hill Country has prompted LCRA to open a flood gate at both Wirtz Dam and Starcke Dams to allow water to pass into Lake Travis. Water levels along the way may be higher and faster than usual.
Overnight
We expect drier weather settles in tonight with overnight lows dropping into the low 70s.
Tonight's forecastDrier Thursday and Friday
As high pressure nudges a little closer, our inverted trough moves away we'll see a pair of much-needed drier weather settle in for Thursday and Friday. These won't be completely dry days because a few very isolated showers may develop each afternoon, but rain coverage looks to be 10% or less giving some welcome relief from the daily rounds of rain and storms.
Thursday's forecastHigh temperatures should bounce back into the middle 90s both days with very high humidity making it feel like triple digits during the afternoon.
Wetter this weekend
Shower and storm chances bump back up to 30% for both days of the weekend with at least scattered showers and storms possible each afternoon and early evening. We don't anticipate severe weather, but storms could produce locally heavy rain. Should the rain fall on top of already saturated soil then a localized flood risk could materialize, especially in the Hill Country or the western Austin metro.
Weekend forecastThere will be long dry periods this weekend too with an otherwise partly sunny sky, but just be ready for some downpours in spots later in the day.
Turning drier and hotter next week
Rain chances start to come down early next week with drier and hotter weather taking it's place thanks to building high pressure bringing sinking air to Central Texas.
High pressure building in next weekHigh temperatures should start to warm back into the middle and upper 90s, but with such wet soil it will be incredibly humid for the foreseeable future.
