New The Big Bang Theory spin-off finally confirmed as beloved characters set to return

The world of The Big Bang Theory just got even bigger as HBO Max has ordered a full season of "complex science fiction" spin-off Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, which returns fan favourite characters to our screens – but not necessarily as we know them.

The series will pick up with Stuart Bloom (played by Kevin Sussman) – owner of the comic book shop frequented by the nerdy characters of the original series – as he is thrown into a fittingly sci-fi-themed adventure.

The surreal synopsis, courtesy of HBO Max, states that Stuart will be "tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon".

It continues: "Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise [Lauren Lapkus], geologist friend Bert [Brian Posehn] and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke [John Ross Bowie].

"Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don't go well."

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe stars Sussman, Lapkus, Posehn and Ross Bowie were all recurring players in the original sitcom, but this latest spin-off will place them centre-stage for the first time – in a story influenced by recent comic book fare.

Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, DC's The Flash and the animated Spider-Verse films have also dealt with alternate realities, leading 2023's Deadpool & Wolverine to joke that the concept has been exhausted.

Here's hoping that Stuart Fails to Save the Universe can find some new angles to delight viewers, with the prospect of alternate versions of Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) sure to intrigue longtime fans.

It's as yet unclear, however, whether any of the original The Big Bang Theory cast members will feature, besides the four individuals named in the synopsis.

Executive producer Chuck Lorre, returning from the original series, said: "I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated, and argued about."

Fellow exec producer Zak Penn commented: "I was on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre asking if I wanted to help make a show that the characters from Big Bang Theory would watch.

"I couldn’t resist that idea, so I packed up my yurt and hailed the next dirigible out. At the same time, Chuck sent an expedition to locate Bill Prady, who had been frozen with his shield across his chest in a block of arctic ice.

"The team assembled, we set out to make this insane show, which lives in a universe created by Chuck and Bill. I couldn't be more honoured to be working with these amazing people."

Prady described Stuart Fails to Save the Universe as a "complex science fiction story", keeping it distinct from earlier The Big Bang Theory spin-offs Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, which are more traditional sitcoms.

The series does not yet have a premiere date, but will be coming to streaming platform HBO Max in the US. A UK broadcaster is still to be determined.
