A Windsor man who planned to have three people associated with his case killed while serving time in the Larimer County Jail was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday.
Joshua Anderson, 32, pleaded guilty to a single count of aggravated retaliation of a witness as part of a plea deal. The deal dropped a solicitation of retaliation against a witness or victim charge, three charges of attempted retaliation against a witness or victim, a conspiracy to commit first-degree murder after deliberation charge, a solicitation to commit first-degree murder charge, two charges of violent use of a weapon, and a sentence enhancer as a habitual criminal, according to court records.
While Anderson was awaiting trial in a separate 2022 attempted murder case out of Fort Collins, sheriff’s deputies learned in 2023 that Anderson was allegedly coordinating a plan to kill a witness and a victim in that case. Deputies said Anderson asked another inmate for assistance with the murders in exchange for helping the inmate post bond.
Once the inmate was released on bond, he reported Anderson’s offer to the sheriff’s office, according to reporting by 9 News. He said Anderson gave him a number to call for supplies that belonged to Jesse Mewes and letters with the names and addresses of the individuals he wanted to kill, according to an arrest affidavit the station obtained.
Mewes, a 35-year-old Fort Collins man, was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, carrying a concealed weapon and a sentence enhancer as a habitual criminal in 2023, according to previous reporting. He pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon as part of a plea deal and was sentenced to three years of probation, according to court records. The weapons possession charge was dismissed as part of the plea and the conspiracy to commit first-degree murder charge and the sentence enhancer no longer appear in court records.
