Two Greeley Recreation flag football teams will compete at the NFL Flag Championships next week at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
The Greeley Elite’s 8-and-under and 12-and-under teams qualified for the NFL event after winning regional titles hosted by the Denver Broncos in May in Aurora.
A group of about 50 people on the Greeley teams, including players, coaches and family members, leave July 17 for Canton. The teams will be in pool-play games Saturday, July 19 and single-elimination playoff games Sunday, July 20.
The teams plan to return home July 21. The groups’ trip to Canton is expected to include a visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, according to Greeley coach Gary Fuentes.
The members of the Greeley 8-and-under team going to Canton are Donoven Fuentes, Owen Bischoff, Nash Chapman, Lawrence Fehringer, Chris Kincaid, Maxx Nunez and Rafael Scolaro.
The players on the 12-and-under team are Jayven Fuentes, Levi Perlman, Aiden Acosta, Sabre Kaufman, Jace Hatfield, Jase Groeger, Theo Truchses, Brayden Guiterrez, Isaiah Loya and Landon Espinosa.
The team coaches are Gary Fuentes, Miriam Fuentes, Eli Perlman, Cory Fehringer and Dana Bischoff.
Greeley Recreation announced the addition of an all-girls flag football league to the recreation lineup this fall. Girls born from 2013-18 are eligible to play, according to a Greeley Recreation social media post. The sport is popular and fast growing among girls from ages 6-17, the post said. There is currently a waiting list to play on both teams, for girls born from 2013-15 and girls born from 2016-18. For more information, go to greeleygov.com/activities/recreation/register.
The NFL Flag Championships, held for the second time, are a large-scale flag football tournament with different age groups: under 8, under 10, under 12 and under 14. There is also a high school girls division.
NFL Flag is the official flag football program of the NFL.
The tournament will run July 17-20 and will include regional winning teams representing all 32 NFL clubs, according to the NFL Flag website.
