ESPN calls out ‘area of concern’ for Alabama in 2025

ESPN released a new story on Wednesday morning highlighting “areas of concern” for every program in its top-25 ahead of the upcoming season.

Alabama is gearing up for a pivotal year under Kalen DeBoer, but ESPN’s story has spotlighted the Tide’s pass rush as a potential concern entering this fall. Here’s some analysis from ESPN’s Chris Low on what Alabama is missing at that position:

Alabama finished 13th in the SEC last season in quarterback sacks, and while sacks aren’t the end-all when it comes to rushing the passer, the Crimson Tide need to be more consistent in getting to the opposing quarterback. There’s not a pure edge pass rusher in the mold of Will Anderson Jr. or Dallas Turner on this roster, meaning Alabama will need to get more pressure from its interior linemen and perhaps a breakout season from redshirt sophomore outside linebacker Qua Russaw.

Indeed, pass rush was a big problem for Alabama at times last season. Low noted the lack of sacks, but Alabama also finished 12th in the SEC last season in Pro Football Focus’ pass rush grade.

The good news for Alabama is that it does have a veteran defensive line room featuring players like LT Overton, Tim Keenan and James Smith. A breakout season from Russaw off the edge would certainly do a lot to help matters as well.

Alabama has major College Football Playoff aspirations this year after missing out on the CFP a year ago. The Crimson Tide will hope to be improved on both sides of the ball as they work to get back to college football’s biggest stage.

Alabama will open the 2025 season on the road against Florida State on Aug. 30.
