Emotional John McEnroe ‘so sad’ after watching devastating Wimbledon moment unfold – ‘It can’t be again’

JOHN McEnroe was left devastated after a heartbreaking moment on Centre Court.

McEnroe, 66, was commentating for ESPN on a fourth-round match at Wimbledon on Monday.

The tennis icon turned broadcaster watched No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner take on Grigor Dimitrov.

Underdog No. 19 seed Dimitrov held a two-set lead and was on his way to pulling off a stunning upset.

But he suffered a painful looking chest injury at the start of the third set.

“He hurt himself on that volley,” McEnroe was heard saying on commentary.

Dimitrov, 34, hit the turf as medics and his opponent Sinner rushed to check on him.

The Bulgarian clutched his chest and said “my pec, my pec.”

He was in visible agony and left the court with a trainer for medical assistance.

But he returned just minutes later with a shake of his head.

Dimitrov was tearful as he approached Sinner to shake his hand and concede the match.

“It can’t be again,” McEnroe said.

“Wow. Oh God. That’s so sad.”

Dimitrov was forced to retire injured again – as he did in the first round at the Australian Open and French Open.

Sinner advanced to a quarterfinal clash with American No. 10 seed Ben Shelton.

But the No. 1 seed was rightly more concerned about his opponent’s health than his victory after the game.

“I don’t take this as a win at all,” Sinner said in his on-court interview.

“This is just a very unfortunate moment for us to witness for all of us.

“In the last Grand Slams, he struggled a lot with injury and seeing this now again, with this type of injury it’s very tough.

“We all saw his reaction, how much he cares about tennis. He’s one of the most hard-working players on the tour.

“It’s very unfortunate. This is not the end we wanted to see and it’s very sad.

“We all wish him the best.”

McEnroe splits his time commentating at Wimbledon between ESPN and BBC in the UK.
