Alonso slams Aston Martin’s ‘very wrong’ calls in British GP

Fernando Alonso didn’t hold back during last weekend’s British Grand Prix, voicing clear frustration over his Aston Martin team’s strategy decisions that he believes cost him a stronger result.

Despite the Silverstone-based outfit securing their first double points haul of the season, with teammate Lance Stroll finishing seventh, Alonso’s discontent was clear, the Spaniard believing that a missed opportunity had been thwarted by Aston’s strategists.

While Stroll, who started a lowly 17th capitalized on a well-timed switch to the soft tyre between the first Virtual Safety Car and the onset of rain, leaping ahead of his teammate, Alonso’s own gamble to switch to mediums as the track dried came a few laps too early, forcing him to tiptoe around and lose valuable time.

During the race, the Spaniard’s frustration boiled over on the radio, as he questioned the team’s decisions.

“All the people we lose places to, they have worse tyres or we just lose places for fun?” he said, following up his sarcastic question with a pointed, “Crazy how you never get it right with me.”

Alonso Reflects on a Missed Opportunity

Post-race, Alonso doubled down on his assessment, acknowledging the team’s strategic errors while maintaining perspective on the unpredictable nature of mixed-condition races.

“Quite disappointing race for us to be honest, starting P7, finish P9,” he said.

“It feels like we lost an opportunity to score more points but we got it wrong today, very wrong with the strategy and this can happen in a messy race.

“Last week, a one-stop in Austria was the right call to score more points than what we deserve probably and today we were a little unlucky so hopefully the next race we have an opportunity in mixed conditions, we get it right.”

While the F1 veteran’s comments were sharp, they reflected his relentless drive to maximize every opportunity in a competitive season.

Overall, Alonso’s ninth place finish combined with Stroll’s seventh, secured valuable points for Aston Martin, but the two-time world champion’s focus remains on ensuring the team sharpens its strategic execution.

As the championship moves forward, Alonso is hopeful that lessons learned from Silverstone will pave the way for stronger performances in upcoming races, particularly in challenging conditions where strategy can make or break a result.
