Hip-Hop Legend Celebrates 56th Birthday in Unexpectedly Groovy Way

Happy Birthday, RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan!

The man born Robert Fitzgerald Diggs turned 56 on July 5, and of course, he celebrated with music. As the de facto leader of the hip-hop collective, RZA oversaw the production of their debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), and the first wave of the members' solo albums. His style of reworking soul samples and incorporating cinematic elements into his beats has made him one of the most influential producers of all time.

But who figured he was a Phish fan?

RZA attended the band's July 5 show at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado. According to Billboard, drummer Jon Fishman shouted, "Happy Birthday, Rizz!" during a cover of the Talking Heads' "Crosseyed and Painless." Guitarist and vocalist Trey Anastasio added a bit of the "Happy Birthday" song into the performance before adding "Wu-Tang Forever!"

Anastasio also met up with RZA backstage. The Phish frontman shared photos of the meeting, including RZA inspecting Trey's custom Paul Languedoc guitars. Anastasio is also a Wu-Tang devotee, quoting the band's "7th Chamber Pt. II" in the caption.

"Ruler Zig-Zag-Zig Allah jam is fatal/ Quick to stick my Wu-Tang Jedi guitar right through your navel. Happy birthday Bobby Diggs! #WuTang4ever," wrote Trey.

This meeting of two music legends may have been a coincidence. Wu-Tang Clan were in the area, having played Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village, CO, on July 4. Still, it looks like RZA had a blast. He shared Trey's photos on his Instagram feed, along with other highlights from his birthday.

RZA's festivities included a crowd shouting "Happy Birthday," a party with a Wu-Tang-themed cake, and more. "Thanks to all the family, good companions, and fans for all of the Born Day blessings," remarked RZA.

RZA first burst on the scene in the early 1990s alongside GZA, Masta Killa, Method Man, U-God, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, and the late Old Dirty Bastard. Both '93's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and 1997's Wu-Tang Forever are considered seminal hip-hop works.

In February 2025, Wu-Tang announced their farewell tour, "The Final Chamber," which will conclude on July 18 in Philadelphia.

"This is a special moment for me and all my Wu brothers to run around the globe together one more time," said RZA in a statement, "and spread the Wu swag, music, and culture. Most importantly, to touch our fans and those who have supported us throughout the years."
