Kansas City Chiefs makes final decision over quitting Arrowhead for new $2bn stadium – and given 1 year deadline

IT’S been revealed that the Kansas City Chiefs have a hard deadline to build a new stadium.

The Chiefs have been considering relocating from Arrowhead Stadium, the team’s home for over five decades.

The Chiefs have sought funding from the state of Kansas to renovate their stadium, which has raised the possibility of the team relocating across the state line from Missouri to build a $2 billion stadium.

Kansas applied a June 30, 2025 deadline on its offer to build a new venue for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs requested an extension on the deadline, and Kansas has responded.

On Monday, WIBW.com reported that Kansas’s new deadline is June 30, 2026.

That means the Chiefs have a little less than a full year to pick one state or another to build a new stadium.

As a result, the Chiefs have leverage on both Kansas and Missouri to find the best deal possible.

The Chiefs have to decide between a renovated Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri or a new domed stadium in Kansas.

During the offseason, Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt has made it known that he wants a dome added to GEHA Field at Arrowhead.

“I do think for the community, a dome would be a tremendous asset,” Hunt said in March at the NFL’s annual league meeting.

“It would give the Kansas City region an opportunity to host significant events.”

The Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals have played for over 50 years at the Truman Sports Complex on the east side of Kansas City, Missouri.

It’s likely that the Chiefs already know their preference to stay in their familiar confines.

Still, the two sports franchises’ leases with Jackson County are set to expire in January 2031.

Arrowhead was last renovated just 15 years ago, costing $375 million.

The stadium has a capacity of 76,416.

The Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl successes have caused the team to want to expand.

Last month, the Missouri Legislature completed its approval of a stadium funding bill for the Chiefs and Royals.

A majority of the representatives supported the bill to keep the teams that will look to continue their economic benefits to the Kansas City area and the state.

“This is a zero-sum game. If we lose [the teams], the revenue we’re worried about no longer exists [in Missouri],” Rep. Keri Ingle said.

“The fact that we’d be willing to forgo that, I know we’re smarter than this.”
