Franklin W. Stahl, the molecular biologist renowned for co-authoring the landmark Meselson-Stahl experiment, has died at 95. Stahl's 1958 study with Matthew Meselson provided definitive evidence for the semiconservative model of DNA replication, confirming Watson and Crick's theoretical model: that each new DNA double helix contains one original and one newly synthesized strand. This discovery became a cornerstone of biology.

Born in Boston in 1929, Stahl studied at Harvard and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester before a postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech with Max Delbrück.
