Mr. Rogers Clinch, age 87 of the Dillards Creek Community, departed this life at 6:45 a.m. Friday morning July 4, 2025 with his wife at his bedside at their Orchard Lane farm home.

Graveside services and interment conducted by David Steen will be held on Thursday afternoon July 10th at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in section five at Ridgewood Cemetery with military graveside services by American Legion Post # 57.

    Family and friends will assemble at the graveside for the services at 1 p.m. and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.

    Born Luther Rogers Clinch (Cherokee Indian name (Waya Kunega) in Joplin, Missouri on January 1, 1938 of Cherokee Indian descent, he was one of four children of Luther Alec Clinch who died at the age of 81 on May 1, 1977 and Mary Jewel Dellaughter Clinch who died at the age of 92 on March 27, 2000.

    Reared in Vinita, Oklahoma where he graduated high school, he graduated college at Southwestern Union College in Keene, Texas in 1973 with a double major in Social Sciences and a double major in Secondary Education and minors in Elementary Education, Art and Religion.

    Two siblings preceded him in death, Laquenta Wiley Cannon and Wallace Wiley Clinch.

    An aunt, Pearl Lee “Pearlie” Clinch Purden, also preceded him in death at the age of 76 on May 30, 1976.

    Mr. Clinch proudly served our country with the United States Army and served with the 76th Tank Battalion of the 11th Airborne Division and was discharged with the rank of private on July 24, 1957 with two years, four months, and fourteen days of service.

    He was internationally known and recognized as an Authority on Cherokee History and Religions and was a student of the Bible for over sixty years, and as a Cherokee storyteller which he began in 1975 at the age of 38.

    He appeared in the movies; “The Last of the Mohicans” and “Get Serious”. He wrote a chapter in the book; “We Dance Because We Can” and the Awakening of Turtle Island”.

    Mr. Clinch appeared as an authority on the Cherokee Nation at Traditional Native American Celebrations, Universities, Service Organizations, Schools and Churches.

    Mr. Clinch was a flute maker, of which he was an accomplished player and also was a ceremonial pipe maker. 

    Surviving is his wife, Israeli native, Esther Levi, his caregiver, Nancy Berry of Carthage; four children, Rogers Clinch Jr and Anhwake Clinch both of Nashville, Tina Clinch of Texas, Wendy Clinch of the Elmwood Community; sister, Brenda Dunderstradt of Oklahoma; several grandchildren and a great-grandson, Kingston Davis of Carthage.
