After nearly three decades of sitting behind the drum kit for iconic grunge groupPearl Jam, Matt Cameron is hanging up his sticks. The 62-year-old drummer announced his departure from the group on Monday, July 7, by posting a heartfelt message on Instagram.
“After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,” wrote Cameron, who joined the group in 1998 (replacing drummer Jack Irons). Before that, Cameron played in the proto-grunge group Bam Bam, fronted by underground icon Tina Bell and one of Pearl Jam’s fellow grunge rock gods: Soundgarden.

Cameron gave “much love and respect” to Jeff Ament, Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready and Stone Gossard for “inviting me into the band…and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, one filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter.”
“I am forever grateful to the crew, staff, and fans the world over,” concluded Cameron. “It’s been an incredible journey. More to follow. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

Cameron played in Soundgarden up until its initial breakup in 1997. He pulled double duty for both bands following Soundgarden’s reunion in 2010, up until their second breakup in 2017 following Chris Cornell’s death.
Additionally, Cameron played in Temple of the Dog, a Seattle supergroup featuring Cornell and the members of Pearl Jam. The band was a tribute to the late Andrew Wood, lead singer of Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone (the band Gossard and Ament were in before Pearl Jam).
Cameron is a two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, having been inducted with Pearl Jam in 2017 and with Soundgarden in 2023.
Following the news of Cameron’s departure, fans speculated that he may be joining Foo Fighters. Early in the year, the band fired its drummer, Josh Freese, without any explanation. Recently, the band continued its 30th anniversary celebration by releasing its first new song in two years.
